Archaeological Monitoring of a Stormwater Trench Excavation in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Jeffrey T. Jones

Year: 2014

Summary

In response to a recommendation by the City of Phoenix Archaeology Department, the City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department contracted with Tierra Right of Way Services, Ltd. (Tierra), to conduct archaeological monitoring of trenching within 15 m (50 feet) north and south of a projected prehistoric canal alignment mapped in the early 1900s.

Monitoring of the stormwater trench excavations found no evidence of the prehistoric canal, suggesting that the projected alignment of the canal is not accurate, or that the canal has been destroyed by modern or historic development in the project area. No historic or prehistoric cultural materials were noted.
