Results of Archaeological Testing for the Salt River Valley Canal (AZ T:12:222 [ASM]) for the City Hotel Project

Author(s): John M. Lindly

Year: 2005

Summary

This document presents the results of limited archaeological testing for a segment of the Salt River Valley Canal that would be affected by the City Hotel project located in Phoenix. The testing was requested by the City of Phoenix Downtown Development Department on the advice of the City Archaeologist under an on-call archaeological services contract between the City and SWCA, Inc. (Contract no. 110326).

Archaeological testing documented remnants of three features in the project area: the historic Salt River Valley Canal, a privy and a house footing. The Salt River Valley Canal (AZ T:12:222 [ASM]) had no intact canal sediments and was filled in with modern (circa 1960s-1970s) construction debris. The privy dates to 1890-1910 and was excavated during testing. The footing discovered during this project was probably part of a house foundation dating to before 1893.
