Outpost Estates II: Archaeological Testing Results and Data Recovery Plan for AZ BB:10:59 (ASM), Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): India S. Hesse
Year: 2005
Summary
SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA), under contract with Outpost Development, conducted archaeological testing at site AZ BB:10:59 (ASM) in unincorporated Pima County, near Tucson, Arizona. Site AZ BB:10:59 (ASM) lies partially within the site of a proposed residential development located on privately held land.
Site AZ BB:10:59 (ASM) was originally recorded by Professional Archaeological Services of Tucson (P.A.S.T.) as an extensive, light-to-moderate prehistoric Native American lithic and ceramic artifact scatter that extends beyond the property onto nearby parcels (Stephen 2005). In consultation with the Pima County Cultural Resources and Historic Preservation Office and the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), AZ BB:10:59 (ASM) is considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Although no further archaeological work had been conducted at the site prior to the current investigations, previous work nearby at AZ BB:10:46 (ASM)—indicated the possibility of a buried Early Agricultural period component (Huckell et al. 1995). The current testing program was designed to test for the nature and extent of buried features (either Hohokam or Early Agricultural) and to evaluate the findings as to their potential to yield additional data pertinent to research domains of Chronology, Subsistence, and Local and Regional Interaction.
Archaeological testing/Phase I data recovery was conducted from June 20 through June 27, 2005, during which 23 backhoe-trenches totaling 591 linear meters were excavated within the site boundaries. Eleven person-field days were expended. Forty features of prehistoric cultural origin were identified, indicating that the site can provide additional information significant to our understanding of the prehistoric occupation of the area, particularly with regard to the problem domains outlined in the Testing Plan (Hesse 2005). Therefore, SWCA recommends either complete avoidance of the site through County and SHPO-approved means, or additional study of AZ BB:10:59 (ASM) within the Outpost Estates II parcel to mitigate the effects of the proposed development.
