Archaeological Testing of a Portion of AZ T:12:203 (ASM) in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Michael S. Foster
Year: 2008
Summary
Seefried Properties is proposing the development of approximately 20 acres called the Buckeye 71 Corporate Center. A portion—approximately 4 acres—of a prehistoric Hohokam site, AZ T:12:203 (ASM), extends into the property. The site was recorded as a prehistoric artifact scatter with ceramics, flaked stone, and ground stone with a light scatter of Historic period Euroamerican materials. SWCA was contracted to complete archaeological testing of AZ T:12:203 (ASM) within the project area to assist the property owner and project proponent in complying with Arizona Revised Statutes §41-865 and the City of Phoenix Ordinance on Historic Preservation (see Bostwick 2006).
SWCA excavated thirty-six 20-m-long backhoe trenches totaling 720 linear meters of trench within and adjacent to the boundary of AZ T:12:203 (ASM). Five subsurface non-cultural features were encountered. No cultural artifacts—prehistoric or Historic period—were found in or adjacent to these features. Their age and precise origin are undetermined; they are thought to be in-filled swales or rills. Only 15 prehistoric artifacts, mostly ceramic sherds, were exposed as a result of the subsurface testing. Based on the testing completed by SWCA and described in this report, no additional archaeological work is recommended within Seefried Properties’ portion of AZ T:12:203 (ASM). It is further recommended that AZ T:12:203 (ASM) no longer be considered eligible for listing in the NRHP.
