Summary

Trico Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Trico), plans to use federal funding from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) to rebuild overhead Circuits 12 and 18 near Marana in unincorporated Pima County, Arizona. Seventeen new poles and pole-anchors will be erected in Hog Farm Ball Court site, AZ AA:11:12(ASM). An additional 11 poles will be replaced in the same location as existing poles (in-place replacement).

RUS consulted with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and it was determined that the project would adversely affect the site. An archaeological treatment plan (Barr and Whittlesey 2009) was developed, and memorandum of agreement (MOA) between RUS and the SHPO was signed to address mitigation of the adverse effects.

In August 2010, SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted archaeological test excavations at the 17 proposed pole and pole-anchor locations in accordance with the treatment plan (Barr and Whittlesey 2009). This document presents the results of the test excavations.

Archaeological test excavations at 17 proposed pole and pole- anchor locations within the Hog Farm Ball Court Site, AZ AA:11:12(ASM), identified no significant subsurface cultural deposits that would contribute to the property’s National Register of Historic Places eligibility. SWCA recommends no further archaeological work at these 17 locations. Per the treatment plan, SWCA will monitor the in-place replacement at an additional 11 pole locations.
