A Cultural Resource Survey of 160 Acres for a Proposed Prison Facility at the ASPC - Special Management Unit Near Florence, Pinal County, Arizona
Author(s): R. Thomas Euler
Year: 1993
Summary
On September 21, 1993, archaeologists from SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants of Tucson, Arizona, conducted an intensive archaeological survey of approximately 160 acres for a proposed prison expansion. The purpose of these investigations is to locate and describe all cultural resources within the parcel that might be adversely affected by construction of the proposed Special Management Unit prison facility. The entire quarter section in which the project area is located was surveyed.
The archaeological survey was requested by Mr. Lynn Arrington of The Benham Group of Phoenix, Arizona. The survey work was completed under Arizona State Museum Permit No. 93-29. The project was directed by Tom Euler, and Laurel Myers, Rick Ward, and Jennifer Rickart served as crew members. The purpose of these investigations was to locate and describe all cultural resources that might be adversely affected by construction of proposed Special Management Unit prison facilities. Four previously unrecorded sites (AZ U:15:233 [ASM], AZ U:15:234 [ASM], AZ U:15:235 [ASM]) and AZ U:15:236 [ASM]), and one isolated occurrence were identified within the project area boundaries. The four newly recorded sites are prehistoric artifact scatters; all but site AZ U:15:234 (ASM) also contain evidence of "roasting pit" features. All four sites are potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register under Criterion "D." Criterion "D" applies to all sites "that have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important for prehistory or history." These four sites should be avoided during the proposed construction activities. If avoidance is not feasible, appropriate testing and, if necessary, data recovery strategies should be developed and employed.
