Archaeological Testing Report for the Proposed Juvenile Courts, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): Thomas D. Yoder; Laural Myers; Mark Slaughter
Year: 1996
Summary
On May 3, 1996, archaeologists from SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants of Tucson, Arizona conducted archaeological testing at AZ BB:13:515 (ASM) for the Pima County Department of Public Works. This testing program was performed in order to assess the significance of the cultural remains which may be impacted by the construction of proposed Juvenile Court buildings. This project was performed at the request of Ms. Linda Mayro, Pima County Archaeologist, under State Lands Cultural Use Permit No. 96-28.
AZ BB:13:515 (ASM) was initially found and recorded during a pedestrian survey of the project area by SWCA, Inc. on April 9, 1996. A literature search conducted at that time showed that no previously recorded sites are located in the project area. Archaeological testing of AZ:BB: 13:515 (ASM) confirmed that there was some use of the project area during historic times. Historic evidence was probably associated with refuse deposition rather than actual occupation of the area. The artifact assemblage from the site suggests lithic procurement and testing of local resources, although not necessarily during prehistoric times. The context of the artifacts at the site is poor because of extensive mechanical disturbance and modem refuse dumping. Due to the limited amount of interpretable information that was gathered from the site during testing, we believe that data recovery is not necessary.
