Archaeological Testing at Gateway Community College in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Michael Stubing; Douglas R. Mitchell

Year: 1996

Summary

Archaeological testing was conducted by SWCA, Inc. from May 17 to 23, 1996 on a parcel of land located on the northern portion of the Gateway Community College property in southeast Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. The testing was requested by the Maricopa County Community College District to identify any cultural materials prior to proposed development and construction within the area. Seventeen backhoe trenches were excavated within the parcel. A single archaeological feature, a prehistoric irrigation canal, was found. Due to the near absence of archaeological remains in the project area, the proposed improvements to Gateway Community College should not significantly impact any cultural resources. Based on these findings archaeological clearance for the testing parcel is recommended.
