Archaeological Testing of Seven Sites in the Estrella Mountain Ranch Development, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Michael Stubing; Douglas R. Mitchell
Year: 1997
Summary
This report details the results of an archaeological testing program conducted in the Estrella Mountain Ranch Development, located in Goodyear, Arizona. The testing program was implemented to assess the significance of seven archaeological sites, AZ T:11:27, AZ T:11:55, AZ T:11:57, AZ T:11:58, AZ T:11:59, AZ T:11:64, and AZ T:11:65 (all ASM). The sites were among a total of twelve located during an archaeological survey of 3900 acres of the Estrella Mountain Ranch Development. Further archaeological work was recommended for these seven sites prior to proposed development within the area. The testing was conducted at the request of Sunchase Estrella Limited Partnership, owners of the land containing the sites.
The seven archaeological sites investigated during this testing project represent limited activity areas used by Hohokam and Patayan groups. Six of the seven sites included surface features and artifact scatters confined to the surface. The seventh site, AZ T:11:65 (ASM), was a single roasting feature with a small amount of associated artifacts. The feature contained a shallow pit located beneath the surface, and was partially excavated. The sites represent the remains of chipping stations and plant processing areas, probably used between A.D. 700 and 1300.
