Archaeological Testing at Four Sites on the Coyote Creek Property, in the Rincon Valley, East of Tucson, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): David P. Doak
Year: 1999
Summary
In April, 1998, archaeologists from SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants conducted a cultural resource evaluation of a 979-acre parcel of privately held lands in the Rincon Valley, southeast of Tucson, Arizona. The work was done at the request of Mr. Peter Backus of PB Trading Company, Inc. Most of the area under consideration—approximately 809 acres—had been surveyed as part of a 5,800 acre survey conducted by SWCA personnel in 1988 (Sires and Gregory 1989). The 1998 operation involved the survey of the previously unsurveyed 170 acres of the parcel, and a reevaluation of sites recorded within the parcel in 1988. In total, three previously recorded sites (AZ BB:14:389, 390, and 391 [ASM]) and one previously unrecorded site (AZ BB:14:652 [ASM]) were found to lie within the parcel. All of these sites were judged to be potentially eligible for National Register inclusion under Criterion (d), in that they held the potential to yield significant information on history or prehistory (Doak 1998).
In the concluding section of the survey report, SWCA called for a subsurface testing program to be implemented on the sites in question, to see if they indeed possess qualities that would make them National Register-eligible. The Pima County Archaeologist has concurred with these recommendations. A plan of work was submitted in December 1998 (SWCA, Inc. 1998); this was approved by the program coordinator for the Pima County Cultural Resources Program, Mr. David Cushman, and work was begun on January 5, 1999.
