Recovery of a Partial Burial from AZ T:12:10 (ASM), Las Colinas, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Richard L. Boston; E. Melanie Ryan
Year: 2002
Summary
On February 5, 2002, City of Phoenix Archaeologist Todd Bostwick contacted Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) to set up a meeting with the City’s Department of Street Transportation staff to coordinate the recovery of a burial that was encountered during the installation of a sewer line. In 1996, Mr. Bostwick recovered a cranium and a whole vessel under emergency conditions from a construction trench that had cut through a Hohokam inhumation (Bostwick 1996). The City attempted to repatriate those remains to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRJPMIC), but SRJPMIC did not wish to repatriate a partial skeleton. Unfortunately before repatriation, the street and sidewalk were reconstructed, thereby covering the remainder of the remains on Phoenix City property. Until funding could be found, the cranium and vessel have been housed at Pueblo Grande Museum.
The Street Transportation Department has an on-call contract (Contract No. 100106) with SA&B, Inc., to provide environmental services. Between March 11 and 19, 2002, ACS, acting as a consultant to SA&B, recovered the remainder of the human remains from beneath the sidewalk. Melanie Ryan and Heather Kober carried out the excavation, and Ms. Ryan and Stephen Reichardt undertook the osteological laboratory analysis between March 19 and 22, 2002, at the ACS laboratory in Tempe. ACS performed the work under Arizona State Museum Project Specific Permit Number 2002-68ps, in accordance with the directives for implementing the Arizona Antiquities Act (A.R.S. §41-844 and §41865).
