1988 Cultural Resources Investigations in the Vicinity of F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming: Volume II
Summary
This report presents the results of cultural resources investigations conducted by Tetra Tech, Inc. at F.E. Warren Air Force Base (AFB}, Wyoming from May to October 1988.
The work consisted of intensive archaeological survey and testing, monitoring of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD} clearance, and evaluation of sites as part of impact assessment for the proposed Peacekeeper Rail Garrison program. Western Public History Associates, a Tetra Tech subcontractor, conducted archival research on selected historic sites from August to October 1988 to assist in evaluating their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Eighteen sites were recorded and evaluated; six of these sites are recommended as eligible for the NRHP. Five of the six sites are part of historic Swan Camp, an interrelated complex of properties reflecting transitional sheep ranching operations of the early 1900s. Swan Camp was also a part of the vast Warren Livestock Company holdings owned by Senator Francis E. Warren. The Swan Camp sites evaluated in this report represent only part of the total Swan Camp facilities. Because of its association with Francis E. Warren, its excellent physical integrity, and its ability to provide information on the development of the livestock industry, Swan Camp and all associated structures and sites are identified as a potential National Register Historic District. The sixth NRHP-eligible site is a small red brick feature associated with early land speculation and farming in southeastern Wyoming.
Volume I contains the inventory results and Volume II contains supporting evidence for inventory results in the form of individual site records, isolated artifact records, stratigraphic notes, and title chains.
