Year: 2023
Summary
On behalf of the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory contracted Versar, Inc. to complete a Phase II NRHP eligibility testing of nine archaeological sites (28BU522, 28BU637, 28BU638, 28BU639, 28BU673, 28BU675, 28BU691, 28BU1007 and 28OC149/151) at JB MDL, New Hanover and Pemberton Townships, Burlington County and Plumsted, Ocean County. Two previously documented potential archaeological locations, UDS-18 and UDS-19 were also surveyed during this investigation and found to be recent military era excavations. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey.
Completed between March 15 and May 22, 2021, and between September 26 and October 14, 2022, field investigations included pedestrian survey and excavation of 512, 15-meter and 7.5-meter interval, 30cm-diameter shovel tests and 55, 0.5m x 1m, 1m2, 1m x 2m test units. The evaluated sites included one with historic occupation, five with prehistoric occupations, and three with both historic and prehistoric components. The Phase II survey recommended four prehistoric sites (28BU637, 28BU673, 28BU691, and 28BU1007) eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The Phase II survey recommended the prehistoric component of 28BU675 eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and the historic component of 28BU675 not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The Phase II survey recommended two prehistoric sites (28BU638 and 28BU639) and two multicomponent sites (28BU522 and 28OC149/151) not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP based on limited artifact assemblages or lack of the necessary integrity to convey significance.
