Archaeological Survey of Baseline Road From 7th to 51st Avenues, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Lourdes Aguila
Year: 1997
Summary
At the request of Brian Kenny of the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). Archaeological Consulting Services., Ltd. conducted an intensive archaeological survey of county and private land along Baseline Road in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. The survey was performed to provide an inventory of cultural resources that might be impacted by proposed road improvements. The work was conducted under permit 97-16BL issued by the Arizona State Museum (ASM). Seven isolated occurrences - were identified.
The project area is located in Section 31, Township 1 North Range 3 East; Section 6, Township 1 South, Range 3 East: Sections 14, Township 1 South, Range 2 East; and Sections 33-36. Township 1 North, Range 2 East (Gila and Salt River Baseline and Meridian) (Table l, Figures 1 and 2). The survey area consisted of a 60-m wide swath (measured from edge of pavement) along both sides of Baseline Road from 7th Avenue to 51st Avenue. and 60-m wide swathes (from edge of pavement) along both sides of four crossing streets (19th Avenue, 27th Avenue, 35th Avenue and 43rd Avenue), north and south of Baseline Road for a distance of 500 m in each direction.
The county has a 110-ft right-of-way for the roads; therefore, most of the survey area is on private land. This area covers approximately 435 acres, of which approximately 276 acres were surveyed. Areas surveyed included vacant lots, fallow fields, and road right-of-way. Obvious private property (i.e., fenced yards) and fields under cultivation were not entered. In these areas, only the county right-of-way was examined (Figures 1 and 2). Portions of the project area were paved and/or landscaped to less than 2 m from the edge of the pavement (i.e. Cesar Chaves Park). These areas were examined although the likelihood of their yielding any significant resources was low. The edges of cultivated fields were examined whenever possible; however, the presence of crops (cotton and alfalfa) severely limited ground visibility beyond the right-of-way. In several places. cultivated fields were bounded by water-filled irrigation canals and fenced property preventing access.
