Summary
Report Abstract:
In order to satisfy the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-665), a cultural resources survey was conducted on board the Patuxent River Naval Air Station (NAS) over a four-month period in 1981 and over 13 months in 1982-83. This multi-faceted study has included preparation of environmental, prehistoric, and historical overviews of the NAS area, and archaeological and architectural field investigations. This volume reports the results of the historical and archaeological research.
The NAS area has been found to have a long and significant history. A total of 46 archaeological sites reflecting that history have been located and interpreted and recommendations made for their management. Prehistoric aboriginal peoples were present in the area by at least the early Archaic period (circa 7,500 BC), up to the arrival of Euro-Americans in the first half of the seventeenth century. A total of 24 prehistoric sites have been discovered. Settlement by Euro-Americans in the NAS area occurred by 1637 and within a few years the area, known as "Mattapanient", had evolved into one of the new colony's major population centers. One site from the early period of occupation, "Mattapany-Sewall" dating circa 1663-1700, has been discovered and tested. A total of 22 historic sites - one seventeenth-century, three eighteenth century, three nineteenth-century, 11 twentieth-century, and four of undetermined date - have been discovered.
