In 1980 an inventory and evaluation of historic sites associated with the early space program was initiated. At the conclusion of the study a total of twenty-five sites nationwide were designated as National Historic Landmarks (NHL) and one site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Also required under this study was an assessment of the deterioration of these facilities and recommendations for practical preservation methodologies and public education programs.
