Phase I Archaeological Survey Management Units 1,2,7,8,11,11A,12, and 13, Avon Park Air Force Range, Avon Park, Florida
Year: 1999
Summary
In a continuing effort to comply with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Avon Park Air Force Range, Florida, conducted two Phase I archaeological surveys, in the Fall of 1998 and in the Spring of 1999. The surveys were contracted through Air Combat Command, Langley AFB, Virginia, and Moody AFB, Georgia. One survey, conducted in November and December of 1998, investigated a 5,700 acre (2,307 hectare) portion of Management Units 1 and 2. The second survey was conducted in April and May of 1999, and investigated a 1,925 acre (779 hectare) portion of Management Units 7, 8, 11, 11A, 12, and 13. The Phase I surveys of management Units 1, 2, 7, 8, 11, 11A, 12, and 13 resulted in the identification of 41 new archaeological sites, including 38 prehistoric sites, 2 historical sites, and 1 multi-component prehistoric and historical site. In addition, work was conducted at two previously identified sites: additional survey was carried out at the Morgan Hole Creek #2 site (8HG688), and artifacts were collected from the surface at the Arnold Homestead site (8PO1001). Based on the results of the Phase I surveys, eight sites are recommended potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. These sites include Willingham Branch (8PO6085), Arbuckle Terrace (8PO6091), Simulated City (8PO6093), Ebersbach Midden North (8PO6094), Blue Jordan Bombing Target (8PO6098), Small Nervosa (8HG937), Psychotria Nervosa (8HG938), and Sandy Point Hammock (8HG941). The cultural resources contained in these sites include six prehistoric sites/components (8PO6085, 8PO6091, 8PO6094, 8HG937, 8HG938, and 8HG941) and two historic sites/components (8PO6093 and 8PO6098).
