Archaeological Test Excavations Along State Route 87, McDowell Road to Shea Boulevard, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Mark R. Hackbarth; T. Kathleen Henderson
Year: 1993
Summary
This report presents the results of archaeological test excavations at 17 prehistoric sites located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Maricopa County, Arizona. The project was conducted by Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) within the State Route 87 corridor between McDowell Road and Shea Boulevard. Among the sites are a prehistoric canal, extensive habitation sites, and smaller or more widely dispersed limited activity areas. The primary purpose of the work was to determine the extent, condition, and distribution of cultural features and deposits within the right-of-way. As a result of testing, subsurface features were encountered at nine sites and surface features at two sites. Additional data recovery efforts are warranted at these sites, in order that all significant values be recovered before their destruction by impending construction along State Route 87. No features were encountered at six sites, and all artifacts within the right-of-way were collected. Thus, no additional fieldwork is recommended. However, information obtained from analyses of artifacts should be incorporated with those of the larger data recovery program.
