Archaeological Excavations of a Salt River Valley Canal Bridge Crossing at the Central Station, 300 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona
Summary
This report describes the results of archaeological excavations conducted by Northland Research, Inc. at the proposed site of the City of Phoenix Central Station, 300 North Central Avenue. The investigations were prompted by the discovery during construction of a concrete feature related to the nineteenth century Salt River Valley Canal. The archaeological investigations resulted in the exposure of the concrete feature, a culvert and outfall box, and five unrelated features. Four of the five features were historic and included a construction trench, a utility trench, a pit, and a wooden power pole. The remaining unrelated feature was a prehistoric metate fragment. All the features were thoroughly documented during the fieldwork; an archival study was also undertaken to supplement the information gained through the archaeological excavations.
