Archaeological Testing Results of a Portion of the Julian Wash Site, AZ BB:13:17 (ASM), Tucson, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): Heather West; David Tucker
Year: 2006
Summary
Between June 19 and June 23, 2006, SWCA conducted archaeological testing of a 26.82-acre parcel of privately owned land (Parcel No. 118-11-049J) in the northwestern part of the Julian Wash Site (AZ BB:13:17 [ASM]) within the City of Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. Testing was conducted in response to the intention of the client, Meridian Engineering, to undertake commercial development of the area. The focus of the current archaeological testing project was to determine the presence or absence of subsurface cultural deposits within the project area.
AZ BB:13:17 (ASM) is a large prehistoric settlement that has been the subject of numerous mitigation projects in the past (Castalia 1992; Ezzo and Whittlesey 1996; Mabry 1990, 1996; Swartz 1997; Whittlesey 1999). Because previous archaeological work in adjacent or nearby areas has demonstrated that AZ BB:13:17 (ASM) is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), testing was not required to determine eligibility, but rather to determine the presence of subsurface cultural deposits within the project area.
Approximately 680 linear meters of backhoe trenches were excavated across the parcel, and a total of 21 possible subsurface features were found. Some of these features are very ephemeral and may not represent definable prehistoric activities, but other features are intact and include pithouses, human burials, and various types of pits. Therefore, significant subsurface archaeological remains are present within portions of the project area. Additional archaeological work is recommended prior to development.
