An Archaeological Survey of 12.5 Acres for CPC Southwest Materials, Inc., Town of Marana, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): David M.R. Barr
Year: 2008
Summary
SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) was contracted by Empire Southwest to conduct an archaeological survey of a 12.5-acre parcel that is privately owned by the California Portland Cement Company (CPC). The survey was conducted to aid Empire Southwest and the CPC in complying with Arizona’s State Historic Preservation Act prior to commercial development.
An archaeological survey of the project area resulted in the re-location of a previously recorded archaeological site, AZ AA:12:20/352 (ASM), that encompasses the entire project parcel. AZ AA:12:20 (ASM) is a large, prehistoric artifact scatter located in the Santa Cruz floodplain. The quantity and diversity of artifacts, in conjunction with the potential for rapid burial of cultural materials, suggest that buried deposits are likely. The site was determined eligible in 2000 for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) under Criterion D. Probable buried deposits and features may contain information relevant to subsistence, paleoenvironmental, and chronometric studies. Although portions of the site have been tested and monitored, most of the investigations have been to the north and east of the current project parcel. SWCA recommends that an agency-approved testing/data recovery program be implemented in the project area.
