Summary
Archaeological testing and data recovery was conducted at AZ EE:1:221 and :222 (ASM), two of several known Hohokam sites in and near the Rancho Sahuarita Block Plat. Both are Rincon phase habitation sites with pithouse, mortuary, extramural storage, and other remains. Located along the Santa Cruz River, they were farming hamlets within a larger, dispersed settlement.
Archaeological testing was conducted at AZ EE:1:221 and :222 (ASM) November 9-20, 1998. On November 19, 1998, human remains found at AZ EE:1:222 (ASM) were repatriated to the Tohono O’odham Nation. The trenches were backfilled on November 24, 1998. Testing was conducted in accordance with the Rancho Sahuarita Specific Plan, the Archaeological Research Guidelines - Rancho Sahuarita Block Plat (ARG) (WestLand Resources and SWCA 1998), and SWCA’s plan of work for the sites (Euler 1998) . Repatriation was carried out in accordance with an existing burial agreement between SWCA and the Tohono O’odham Nation (A.R.S. 41-865, Case No. 96-30).
Archaeological data recovery was conducted at AZ EE:1:221 and :222 (ASM) December 7 18, 1998. On December 10, 1998, additional human remains found at AZ EE:1:222 (ASM) were repatriated to the Tohono O’odham Nation. The excavations were backfilled on December 21, 1998. Data recovery was conducted in accordance with the Rancho Sahuarita Specific Plan, the ARG (WestLand Resources and SWCA 1998), and SWCA’s plan of work for the sites (Archer 1998). Repatriation was carried out in accordance with an existing burial agreement between SWCA and the Tohono O’odham Nation (A.R.S. 41-865, Case No. 96-30).
