Summary

SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants (SWCA) has conducted archaeological testing at 37 sites at the request of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and ASARCO, Inc. (Asarco). The proposed BLM-ASARCO Ray land exchange could impact up to 80 archeological sites within parcels considered for the transfer of surface or minerals out of federal ownership. Twenty of these are sites that were considered eligible for the National Register based on survey data, so no testing was conducted on these sites. Furthermore, 21 sites were deemed ineligible for the National Register on the basis of information potential. Archaeological testing was conducted on 37 sites, however, and the results of this operation are discussed in this document. Two sites that were scheduled to be tested were not relocated during the testing phase despite several attempts to do so, and these sites are now considered ineligible. Excluding the two sites not relocated, the testing plan proposed investigations at 22 prehistoric (Native American) sites, 11 historic (Euroamerican) sites, and 4 sites with multiple components. During testing, however, several sites considered to be single-component from surface remains were revealed to contain both prehistoric and historic components. Of the sites investigated during the testing phase, 19 are Native American in origin and date to the Prehistoric, Protohistoric, or Historical periods, eight are associated with the Historical Period, and ten exhibit both Native American and Historical components. Based on the results of testing, twenty of the 37 sites that were tested have been determined by the BLM to be eligible for the National Register.
