Summary
Maricopa County, the City of Phoenix, and the Central Arizona Shelter Services plan to build a homeless shelter on two adjacent parcels of land in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Within this area are the remains of a prehistoric Hohokam village known as La Villa [AZ T:12:148 (ASM)], as well as remains associated with the early twentieth century history of the City of Phoenix. In order to mitigate the impact of development on these culturally significant properties, Maricopa County contracted Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) to conduct archaeological data recovery within the La Villa/Arizona Shelter project area. The following report documents the results of these data recovery efforts.
Roughly 1,840 linear meters of backhoe trenches were excavated and an estimated 2,600 cubic meters of overburden were removed within these two city blocks as part of Northland’s data recovery efforts, resulting in the discovery of 348 cultural features. Most of these features were associated with the prehistoric settlement of La Villa, including 146 pit houses from a residential district in the heart of the settlement. A poorly preserved historical component was also identified, with the most notable feature being a foundation for a foundry in operation during World War I.
