Archaeological Testing and the Lombeye Ruin and Adjacent Areas, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Jeffrey A. Homburg; Richard Ciolek-Torello

Summary
Archaeological test excavations and surface collections were completed by Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), at the Lombeye Ruin (AZ T:12:109 [ASM]). The major objective of this testing project was to determine if archaeological remains were present in the new right-of-way (ROW) and if they are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This work was completed for the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) prior to construction of left turn lanes and a retention basin. Surface inspection revealed a moderately dense ceramic-and-lithic scatter in the southern part of the Lombeye Ruin, mainly in the spoils of a modem canal cut into a prehistoric midden deposit. Intact cultural features and deposits associated with the Lombeye Ruin were identified in backhoe trenches placed in the new road ROW. Cultural features exposed in trench walls included prehistoric cooking features, a midden deposit, possible prehistoric house pits, a lateral canal of the prehistoric Canal System 7, and possible historical-period irrigation features that are buried. The age of the prehistoric features could not be determined precisely, but they most likely date to the Sedentary and early Classic periods. Based on the presence of intact cultural deposits and features, we recommend that the Lombeye Ruin is eligible for listing in the NRHP under Criterion D. Data recovery is not recommended, as the proposed project will not impact any of the identified cultural remains.
