Archaeological Site Evaluation La Paloma Project Area Tucson, Arizona

Author(s): Allen Dart

Year: 1984

Summary

From November 29 through December 16, 1983, the Institute for American Research (IA R ) conducted archaeological collection and some subsurface testing at three archaeological sites on the "La Paloma" development area owned by Cottonwood Properties, Inc. The project area lies in the Santa Catalina Mountain foothills and comprises 800 acres in Pima County north of Tucson, Arizona. The three archaeological sites have been designated A Z BB:9:127, A Z BB:9:128, and A Z BB:9:129 by the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona. Investigation was under the overall direction of Linda Mayro and field supervisor, Allen Dart. The field crew included Sherry Jernigan, Joan Lloyd and Cynthia Brozek. Tucson archaeologists who volunteered to work on Saturday, December 10 included Bruce B. Huckell and Fred Huntington of the Arizona State Museum, and William Doelle of IAR .

Archaeological investigation was done at the request of Cottonwood Properties to determine the significance of the three sites and to make recommendations for any future research. It was concluded that the largest site, A Z BB:9:127 (ASM), potentially contains a wealth of information on the prehistoric Archaic cultural period that can be recovered by additional archaeological Investigation. The other two archaeological sites yielded relatively small artifact collections from the surface and appear to have little potential for additional surface or subsurface data on prehistoric cultures. Therefore, no further work is recommended for A Z BB:9:128 and A Z BB:9:129.

The three sites have been described in a previous report (Simpson 1983) concerning the intensive archaeological survey of the La Paloma development area. Brief descriptions of the current testing project work done, archaeologists1 findings, and recommendations are presented for each site in this report.
