Archaeological Testing of Three Sites Along the El Rio-Star Pass Reclaimed Water line Tucson, Arizona
Author(s): Mary Bernard-Shaw
Year: 1986
Summary
From December 2 to December 13, 1985 the Institute for American Research conducted archaeological testing for the Tucson Water Department, City of Tucson. Test excavations were conducted at three archaeological sites in the El Rio vicinity. These sites are identified as AZ AA:12:90/AZ AA:12:104, AZ AA:12:487, AZ AA:12:488 as indicated by the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona site numbering system. The personnel assisting in this investigation include the following, William Doelle, Director for the Institute for American Research; Frederick Huntington, research archaeologist; Mary Bernard Shaw, field supervisor; Cindy Casey and Joan Lloyd, field archaeologists; and Gregory Thompson, backhoe operator.
In July of 1985, Allen Dart, archaeologist for the Institute, conducted an intensive survey of the El Rio-Star Pass Water Line. His findings indicated further archaeological testing would be necessary prior to clearance of this area, in order to evaluate the effects from the installation of a 36-inch pipeline (Dart 1985). The area of investigation was restricted to the 50 foot right-of-way of the El Rio-Star Pass Water Line in all localities. Site areas outside this corridor were not tested.
Due to the absence of undisturbed cultural deposits, further archaeological research within the study area is not recommended at this time. Given the restricted nature of the testing procedures used, this clearance recommendation is confined to the study area only, not to areas outside the project corridor. Previous assessments indicate that areas adjacent to the present right-of-way, particularly at site AZ AA:12:90, contain significant deposits of both prehistoric and historic research potential. A description of the archaeological testing results at all three sites is provided below.
