Summary

FEW 220 is one of five target houses at the end of a pre-1890s rifle target practice range associated with Fort D.A. Russell. These early Fort D.A. Russell target ranges are historically important sites. No historic evidence of their existence has yet been located. Further, they represent a very early style of formal U.S. Army firearms training ranges for which little historical and no archeological documentation has been provided within scholarly publications or reports. The resource will be impacted by construction of an industrial road as part of the Roads-Industrial Area (Phase 2) component. Mitigative measures at FEW 220 will include data recovery using a combination of mechanical stripping and removal of fill with a backhoe, along with controlled hand excavation as needed.
