Summary

During June and July of 1999, Rick Bryant, the Historic Preservation Officer at F. E. Warren Air Force Base, monitored environmental testing of Landfills 2a and 2b on the base. The landfills are in and around an intermittent drainage, and test wells had identified potential ground water contamination. The environmental testing was designed to identify the boundaries of the landfills and to determine the nature and extent of landfill materials prior to making a determination of the landfills future treatment. Fifty-six trenches were excavated in and around the landfill, ranging in length from 5 to 300 feet, and in depth from 1 to 8 feet.

A portion of the site was first identified during construction of a sewer line in 1984 and was assigned the number 48LA71DD. The site was tested by Larson-Tibesar Associates (LTA) in 1984, and was recommended as not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. During investigations for the base's Installation Restoration Program (IRP), an Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) program to locate and treat sites containing hazardous materials, the boundaries of the site were significantly increased. The landfill was designated as LF2a. A continuation of the landfill across a road was designated LF2b.
