Identification and Evaluation Survey of Five Previously Identified Archaeological Sites. Cultural Resources Support Services Contract for Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ

Summary

On behalf of the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District contracted First Environment and its subcontractor, RGA, Inc., to complete Phase II site evaluations for five previously identified sites: 28BU524, 28BU534, 28BU535, 28BU674, and 28BU679 at JB MDL, New Hanover and Pemberton Townships and Wrightstown Borough, Burlington County. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey.

Completed between March 28 and May 11, 2022, Phase II field investigations included pedestrian survey and the excavation of 547, 25-foot interval and 10-foot interval, one-foot diameter shovel tests and 41, 3-foot square, and five-foot square test units. Evaluation of 28BU524 (Stackhouse Hotel/H-9 site) identified two distinct domestic deposits relating to the Stackhouse (Locus 1) and Keeler (Locus 2) properties. Locus 1, chiefly pre-dates the hotel’s (pre-1840) operations and are indicative of a domestic site centered within an early crossroad community. Deposits identified within Locus 2 date to the later portion of the nineteenth century.

The Phase II survey recommended one historic site (28BU524) eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The Phase II survey recommended three prehistoric sites (28BU534, 28BU535, and 28BU679) eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The Phase II survey interpreted sites 28BU534 and 28BU535, in conjunction with adjacent site 28BU533, as part of a larger occupation affiliated with the Archaic and Woodland periods and suggestive of distinct activity areas. Site 28BU534 contains intact deposits represented by a possible occupation surface, numerous precontact and early historic period artifacts, including a piece of worked olive glass, Native American tobacco pipe fragments, maize fragments, and a radiocarbon assay dating to the Contact period. Sites 28BU534 and 28BU535 are considered eligible for listing on the NRHP under Criterion D. One prehistoric site (28BU674) was recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
