THE DEMOGRAPHIC IMPACTS OF THE CASTE WAR ON COMMUNITIES IN THE VALLADOLID REGION OF YUCATÁN, MEXICO

Summary

The purpose of this research is to identify the impacts of the Caste War of

Yucatán on the communities within my study area located southwest of Valladolid,

Mexico. In particular, the study area consists of Cuncunul, Ebtun, Kaua, Tekom,

Tixcacalcupul, and the secondary settlements that are associated with these five main

communities. The goal is to demonstrate that this conflict severely affected the social

functioning of these settlements. This has been accomplished by performing a

statistical analysis and GIS visualization of the census data from these communities

for 1841, 1883, and 1890. An examination of these results demonstrates that the

communities experienced substantial population losses following the outbreak of the

war, and that the post-outbreak demographics for the populations had been

significantly altered. However, the ethnic animosities and distrust perpetuated by the

violence of the Caste War do not appear to have influenced the resettling of the

communities following the height of the conflict.
