Class III Pedestrian Survey, Shovel Probe Testing, Limited Nonsite Backhoe Trenching, and Magnetometer Sampling for the San Xavier District Farm Rehabilitation Project, Tohono O’odham Nation, Pima County, Arizona

Summary

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) assisted the Tohono O’odham Nation’s (Nation) San Xavier District’s (District) Farm Cooperative (CoOp) in developing some 1,400 acres of new farm land along both sides of Interstate 19 south of the existing CoOp farm fields. This project was in accordance with the provisions of the 2004 Southern Arizona Water Rights Settlement Act (SAWRSA). The farm extension involved mostly undeveloped allotted desert land that has numerous large prehistoric sites in and around the planned fields. Because the project was federally funded and occurred on Indian allotted lands, it was subject to compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended, and with various ordinances of the District and Nation. Therefore, prior to any ground-disturbing work associated with the project, a cultural resource assessment had to be performed to document the presence, condition, and eligibility of sites that occurred within the project area.

Permission was previously secured by the CoOp from more than 50 percent of the allottees, as documented with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). At the request of Reclamation, Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) was instructed to conduct Class III survey of approximately 1,150 acres of proposed new farm fields along the east side of Interstate 19 south of the San Xavier Mission Road exit, magnetometer sampling and excavation of shovel probes within selected sites, and excavation of backhoe trenches in non-site areas to search for potential buried cultural deposits not evident on the surface.
