Six pollen samples, collected from three archaeological sites, were examined to provide information concerning possible processing activities associated with the use of the pits represented. All three sites are located in the area surrounding Clark Wash near Glade Park in Mesa County, Colorado. Radiocarbon ages place occupation of these sites within the past approximately 1700 years, with the most recent age being approximately 150 BP.

Seven samples from hearth and posthole fill at the Shadow Site (48SW11618) in southwestern Wyoming were examined for pollen. The samples represent a Late Uinta Phase Prehistoric component, and radiocarbon testing of charcoal from Feature 1 returned a 2-sigma calibrated date of 1300 to 1170 B.P. (Beta-208787).

The Mark Twain site (48SW13992) exhibits evidence of at least three occupation components. The oldest component includes three hearths, two of which were excavated into the regolith immediately above bedrock. Feature 3 yielded a radiocarbon age of 4410 ± 50 B.P. The Cul-de-Sac Site, 48SW13648, is a prehistoric camp in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. Six radiocarbon dates, ranging from 1540 to 1900 BP, were obtained from hearth features at the site and indicate at least two occupations dating to the Uinta Phase of the Late Prehistoric period. Four pollen samples were recovered from individual hearths in order to determine possible plant resources available to occupants of the site.

These manos were washed to recover pollen to identify plants that were ground. In addition, two sediment samples were examined from the fill of the hearth and sediment in the structure.
