Roosevelt Platform Mound Study

Part of: Theodore Roosevelt Dam Archaeological Project

This collection contains the reports of the Roosevelt Monograph Series (12 volumes) and data sets created from the research at the sites and multi-site areas investigated as part of the archaeological investigations done to mitigate the impact of raising the level of the reservoir behind the Theodore Roosevelt Dam along the Salt River in the Tonto Basin east of Phoenix, Arizona.

The Roosevelt Platform Mound Study examined the physical and social organization of three Classic Hohokam period community complexes in the Tonto Basin of Arizona known as Pinto Creek, Cline Terrace, and Rock Island. The data come from the investigation of 79 prehistoric sites arranged in three spatial clusters within the Tonto Basin. There are many other sites arranged in other clusters that were not investigated, but the investigations at the 79 sites studied as part of this project provide substantial amounts of data. The project was carried out between 1989 and 1998. Field studies lasted approximately four of these years.

The project was funded through the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of the Interior, and is made necessary by plans to raise the height of the dam at Roosevelt Lake.
