Summary

The Kitchell Testing Provenience Designation (PD) data sheet summarizes the PD's excavated during a preliminary testing phase of a parcel of land owned by the Kitchell Development Co. It is the master list for all excavated contexts in the Kitchell testing program. It contains information about each PD and the features recorded during excavation.

Subsequently, SSI conducted additional testing and full data recovery at a nearby parcel (Unit 15) for the Kitchell Development Co. and the Lauth Property Group. See Archaeological Testing at Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 15, The Former Maricopa County Sheriff's Substation, Washington and 48th Streets, Phoenix, Arizona (SSI Techincal Report No. 99-06) for a final report on that testing and data recovery program at Pueblo Grande.

COLLECTION_UNIT_NUMBER The number designation of a given collection unit. For each site, collection units are numbered in a series from 1 to n within each collection unit type. For example, at one site there may be a Surface Unit #1, and an Excavation Unit #1, and an Auger Test Unit #1. Backhoe trenches are also numbered consecutively per site. CU numbers are not assigned to all CU Types; they are not assigned to CU types that represent partial units and/or are voided contexts.

PD The Provenience Designation (PD) number. A PD is any area that has been examined by archaeological researchers during a given project. PD numbers are assigned to all examined areas, even when no artifacts were collected. For each site, PD numbers run from 1 to n.

RECORDER The initials of the individuals who documented and conducted data recovery in a given PD unit.

UNIT_AREA_NUMBER The number designation of any unit division of a site. When a site is particularly large and/or the cultural deposits complex, the site director might choose to divide the site into units.

AUDIT_VERSION The Soil Systems, Inc. relational database originally contained audit tables for each artifact/analysis type to track updates/changes made to the primary data tables. Database managers recorded changes to particular data values in these audit tables. The changes were then passed on to the main data table (e.g., RS_CERAMICS). The AUDIT_VERSION number refers to the "audit number" for that particular row. Thus, if a data row contains an AUDIT_VERSION value of "2", then that row has been updated/changed with the audit-version number 2 (i.e., it has been updated two times).

LEVEL The number designation assigned to a level in a collection unit. Levels in a collection unit are numbered from 1 to n. The modern ground surface is designated level 0. Backhoe trenches, shovel skimming, backdirt, and stripping are also coded as level 0. For non-burial subfeatures, levels are designated as separate levels in that subfeature, and not as the level of the feature it is in. For burial features, levels are designated as separate levels in the burial pit and are numbered from 1 to n. This level designation system holds even in burial pits that contain multiple burials (and thus have subfeature numbers) in a single pit.
