Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 08, Pueblo Grande Cultural Park: SSI PG Museum Expansion Data Recovery, Faunal (FAUNAL) Data

Summary

The Pueblo Grande Museum Expansion Data Recovery Faunal (FAUNAL) data sheet contains data on the faunal remains recovered during SSI's additional recovery work in Unit 8 of Pueblo Grande. The data set lists the provenience designation (PD) and Field Specimen (FS) number of the remains (Note that it is essential that the PD and FS remain associated to identify a given faunal specimen). If the specimen was recovered from an identified feature, the data set also provides the feature number and feature type. The data sheet then documents a specimen's species designation, estimated age and sex, the element type and number, element side, other anatomical data, condition, and any identified modifications.

AGE The estimated age at death of the animal from which the faunal specimen came. Note that the analyst may record one of two types of age categories: 1) traditional age references (juvenile, adult, etc), or 2) epiphyseal fusion patterns (for long bone portions). Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Fauna Age Coding Sheet for a complete list of available age categories.

FEATURE_TYPE The inferred type (i.e., function and/or cultural use, significance) of a given feature. Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Feature Type Coding Sheet for a list of available feature types.
BIGINT  Coded Value Provenience and Context : Feature ID/Number Soil Systems, Inc. Feature Type Coding Sheet none true
BONE_PORTION The portion of a bone (i.e., vertebral body, diaphysis, articular end) that a faunal specimen represents. The codes in this field refer to a coding scheme in use in 1994. The codes used here are not referenced in the SSI Faunal Species Coding Sheet 2008.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Fauna : Portion/Proximal/Distal none none true

SIDE The side (e.g., left, right) of the bone element. The codes in this field refer to a coding scheme in use in 1994. The codes used here are not referenced in the SSI Faunal Species Coding Sheet 2008.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Fauna : Side none none true
COMMENTS This text field provides a space for additional comments about a faunal specimen.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Fauna none none true
FEATURE_NUMBER The number of a feature identified and documented in a given PD unit. At each site, feature numbers were assigned from 1 to n. Subfeature numbers include the associated feature number followed by a decimal; subfeature numbers begin at .01 for each feature. For example, the second subfeature excavated in Feature 15 is coded as 15.02.
DOUBLE  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Feature ID/Number none none true
FS The field specimen number assigned to an artifact type from a given PD unit. Note that one FS # is assigned to multiple artifacts of the same type from a single PD unit. In the field, specimen numbers were assigned to bags of like artifacts from the same PD. When artifacts were collected, a specimen number was assigned to a bag that contained particular artifact types from a PD unit. Thus, a separate FS # was assigned to the ceramics, lithics, groundstone, etc that were recovered from a PD. Specimen numbers run from 1 to n for each PD unit. Thus, to identify a specific specimen, an analyst must use a combination of the PD No and the FS No.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context none none true
PD The Provenience Designation (PD) number is an area that has been examined by archaeological researchers during a given project. PD numbers are assigned to all examined areas, even when no artifacts were collected. For each site, PD numbers run from 1 to n.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Horizontal Location none none true
PROJECT The SSI project number during which the faunal specimen was collected.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Project none none true
SITE The ASM number of the site under investigation.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Site none none true
AUDIT_VERSION BIGINT  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true
SPECIES The species designation of the faunal specimen. The codes in this field refer to a coding scheme in use in 1994. The codes used here are not referenced in the SSI Faunal Species Coding Sheet 2008. See notes for codes in this data set.

Notes

General Note: Soil Systems analysts stored all provenience and artifact data for post-Hohokam Expressway Pueblo Grande projects in a relational database program called Advanced Revelations (AREV). The provenience and artifact data tables were standardized within this database. Thus, the FAUNA data tables from this project and other Pueblo Grande projects were created in a table named FAUNA_DATA, and saved in this table. The data sheet presented here has been extracted from the FAUNA_DATA table in SSI's AREV database.

General Note: The FAUNA data from this project should be directly compatible with the FAUNA data from all other Soil Systems, Inc. Pueblo Grande projects, because the data were created in a standardized format (see above). Users can easily integrate this FAUNA data with the data from other SSI projects.

General Note: The faunal codes used in this data set PRE-DATE the codes used in many of the other SSI projects at Pueblo Grande after the Hohokam Expressway Project. The codes here refer to a coding sheet dated 1994 (while the other species codes refer to a primary coding sheet dated 2008). The following faunal species codes from the 1994 coding scheme appear in this data sheet in the column "Species": 210=Indeterminate Lagomorpha (Indet. Rabbit) 220=Sylvilagus sp. (Cottontails) 260=Lepus sp. (Jackrabbits) 310=Indeterminate Rodentia (Indet. Rodents) 350=Thomomys sp.(Pocket Gopher) 750=Canis sp.(Coyote/Dog) 2010=Indeterminate Osteichthyes (Indet. Fish) 4100=Indeterminate Testudinata (Order) (Turtle) 5010=Indeterminate Aves (Indet. Birds) 6010=Small Mammal: Rabbit/Rodent‑sized 6020=Small Mammal: Rodent‑sized 6040=Small‑Medium Mammal 6050=Medium Mammal (Carnivore‑sized) 6060=Medium‑Large Mammal 6070=Large Mammal (Ungulate‑sized)
