The Carlota Copper Mine Testing Project: Prehistoric Occupation in the Globe Uplands, Gila and Pinal Counties, Arizona
Author(s): Douglas R. Mitchell; M. Zyniecki
Year: 1994
Summary
The Carlota Prehistoric Testing Program, conducted for the Carlota Copper Company near Miami, Arizona, because of proposed mining operations, sought to determine which sites in a previously surveyed area contained data classes that would allow specific Historic Contexts to be addressed. The survey identified 87 sites, 55 of them prehistoric, in thé 2600-acre study area. After study area boundary reductions, 51 prehistoric sites were examined during the testing project. The Apache Tribe identified one site as a possible Traditional Cultural Property and was given only cursory examination.
Five Historic Contexts were identified: pre-Classic socio-political-ideological systems; Classic period socio-political-ideological systems; prehistoric subsistence; Classic period exchange-trade-commerce; and demography. Chronology was also an important issue to be considered. The 50 investigated prehistoric sites were classified into three property types: residential/habitation sites (n=9), temporary residential sites (n=14), and resource processing/procurement sites (n=27). Temporally, the project area had been occupied during the Archaic period; during the pre-Classic periods, possibly by the Hohokam culture; and during the Classic period by the Salado culture. The artifacts collected during the testing project—ceramics, flaked and ground stone, and faunal remains—were subjected to descriptive analyses. Flotation and pollen samples were also examined from selected sites.
It is recommended that 20 prehistoric sites are eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places and warrant data recovery as the most effective mitigation strategy. Twenty-five sites are ineligible, and five sites are eligible but will not yield any additional data; no further work is recommended for these sites.
