Summary
Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) has completed archaeological testing within a portion of Lombeye Ruin (AZ T:12:109[ASM]), a large Hohokam habitation site located along the Salt River in Phoenix, Arizona. The work was conducted for Cherokee Partners, L.L.C. prior to the planned development of the property and in accordance with City of Phoenix Preservation Ordinance, Section 802(A.1), the Arizona Antiquities Act, and A.R.S.§ 41-865. The purpose of the testing was to determine the nature and extent of subsurface cultural remains within the project area. The site has previously been determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion D (information potential).
Fieldwork for the project was conducted between April 24 and May 2, 2006 under the direction of Andrea Stahman. All fieldwork was accomplished in the manner described in the testing proposal developed for the project (Stahman 2006). Work was conducted in accordance with the City of Phoenix burial agreement by permission from the City of Phoenix Archaeologist, Dr. Todd Bostwick. The testing included limited surface collections and systematic backhoe trenching to determine if intact subsurface features were present. Fifty-five backhoe trenches—totaling 1,080.5 linear meters—were excavated, resulting in the discovery of three subsurface features, including two prehistoric canals and one natural depression. The locations of these features were mapped and basic descriptive information about them was recorded. Soil samples of strata present within each canal were also collected for detailed analysis. The results of this analysis indicate that both canals were small laterals that likely delivered water to fields in the immediate area.
