Summary

The City of Phoenix Aviation Department plans to install a new 1,100-ft-long duct bank at Sky Harbor International Airport, a portion of which falls within the site of Dutch Canal Ruin (AZ T:12:62[ASM]), an extensive Hohokam village that is considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D. Previous investigations by Desert Archaeology in this area of Dutch Canal Ruin uncovered pithouses, roasting pits, and extramural surfaces (Henderson 2000a, 2000b). Because human burials are frequently found at prehistoric habitation sites, the City of Phoenix recommended monitoring of the entire installation to ensure the protection of any significant cultural deposits (e.g., human remains) that might be discovered by the construction.

ACS’ cultural resources monitoring of duct bank trenching at Sky Harbor International Airport encountered one feature, a historic canal, which was designated AZ T:12:275(ASM). The canal’s location and orientation correspond to a small irrigation canal depicted on a 1903 USGS Reclamation Service map; however, the canal was not part of the SRP canal network. The canal is not associated with important persons or events, and exhibits no unique design characteristics. Field documentation and post-field archival research have exhausted its information potential. The canal is therefore recommended not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the duct bank trench was plotted within the boundaries of Dutch Canal Ruin, no evidence of the prehistoric site was encountered; no further archaeological work is necessary for this project.
