Results of Phase II Data Recovery Excavations and Phase II Archaeological Monitoring within the Original Phoenix Townsite, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Mark R. Hackbarth

Year: 2013

Summary

Phase II data recovery investigations were completed according to the specifications of the Treatment Plan previously approved by ASM and COP and infield discussions with COP and the State Historic Preservation Office conducted on March 23 and 27, 2012, and summarized in an email sent to ASM on March 27, 2012. LSD completed mechanical stripping around the features identified during Phase I testing and during Phase II mechanical stripping. Features exposed during the stripping were hand excavated as part of the Phase II fieldwork. Mapping and sampling of buried contexts was completed following methods described in the Treatment Plan. Archival research has been completed using online research of newspapers, censuses, and city directories using keywords or names (e.g., Hassayampa creamery, Arizona Orange Association, and surnames found during a search of city directories). The Phase II investigations have recovered the archaeological data potentials of the resources within the MCSOC project area. The preliminary report recommended that the information potential had been exhausted by completion of the data recovery investigations. LSD recommended that no further archaeological investigations were possible. ASM concurred with the recommendation.

Archaeological monitoring, where temporary trailers were established during the construction phase of the MCSOC project, was conducted as needed. Monitoring was conducted in limited portions to bring utilities to the trailers; archival research was limited to inspection of the Sanborn maps. The archaeological monitoring has not exploited the full research potential of the block and additional archaeological values may be present within the block. LSD recommends that additional archaeological and archival investigations be completed before any future land-disturbing activities are conducted.

An addendum to the original report discussing the reburying efforts of human remains and funerary objects recovered is also attached.
