Results of Archaeological Testing and Data Recovery Plan for the New Warehouse Building at the Ina Road Water Pollution Control Facility, Pima County, Arizona

Summary

This document combines the preliminary results of archaeological testing at AZ AA:12:111 (ASM) with a data recovery plan-of-work based on the results of testing. This document was prepared at the request of Linda L. Mayro, the Cultural Resources Manager for Pima County. All work was conducted under contract no. 70-04-S-131110-0602, work order HYX-726. The proposed location for a new warehouse building at the Ina Road Water Pollution Control Facility is located on the periphery of a previously recorded prehistoric archaeological site, referred to as Las Capas. Archaeological testing was required to explore the area to be impacted by the warehouse.

Fieldwork was conducted on November 8 and 11, 2002. A total of 217 linear meters of backhoe trenches was excavated within the footprint of the proposed warehouse. This includes approximately 15 meters of trench that was stepped-back and excavated to a depth of 8 to 9 feet in the area of a proposed loading ramp for the warehouse. Four features were found during this testing project, all of which appear to be located within Stratum 4, a sediment layer that is known to date to 2,750 to 2,550 B.p. based on previous work. Two canals (Features 1 and 2), a probable posthole (Feature 4), and a pit feature (Feature 3) associated with a large zone of cultural fill were recorded.

The presence of these features suggests that further investigations are warranted prior to the proposed undertaking. Data recovery should include further exploration of the canals, including detailed stratigraphic examination and sampling. Other features at the site should be appropriately excavated. Given that features were found at relatively shallow levels in on the southwest side of the tested area, additional testing in the proposed drainage ditch is warranted. If additional features are found, a representative sample should be excavated. A close comparison of all features excavated for this project should be made to other Stratum 4 features investigated elsewhere, so that the cultural remains on the periphery may be evaluated in light of the more heavily occupied portions of the site.
