Author(s): Kevin D. Wellman; Mark Slaughter
Year: 1995
Summary
From March 8 to March 23, 1995, SWCA, Inc. Environmental Consultants conducted archaeological testing at the Roy P. Drachman Agua Calicnte County Park. The test excavations were conducted at the request of The Pima County Public Works Department in conformance with The testing Plan (SWCA 1995) was developed in response to Work at the park was based on a testing plan submitted by SWCA and on modifications made at the request of Linda Mayro, the Pima County Public Works Department Archaeologist (Mayro 1995. SWCA 1995).
Remains associated with two archaeological sites, the Agua Caliente Ranch (AZ BB: 10:25 [ASM]) and the Whip tail Site (AZ RR: 10:3 [ASM]), are located within the park boundaries (Casta lia .1988: CDG Architects 1993; Gregonis and Huckell 1980: Wm Bryce Lloyd and Associates 1988).
Renovations to the park by Pima County will include the paving of parking areas and access roads, and construction of trails to make them accessible for handicapped visitors. Each of these planned constructions follows closely existing park features. For example, the proposed road and parking lots primarily will expand and improve existing facilities. In addition, a maintenance yard will be constructed and underground utility lines will be installed. Since impacts to the archaeological sites cannot be avoided, the archaeological testing phase was designed to determine what cultural properties might be affected by the proposed construction.
Field work proceeded under an antiquities permit (No, 95-48) from the Arizona State Museum. The purpose of this report is to present the results of testing and to propose a data recovery plan that is consistent with Pima County historic preservation standards.
