Archaeological Excavations at AZ BB:9:144 (ASM): A Limited-Use Site in the Northern Tucson Basin, Pima County, Arizona

Author(s): Mark Slaughter; David A. Phillips, Jr.

Summary

On October 11, 1992, archaeologists from PAST conducted an archaeological survey of the Encanto II property, Pima County, Arizona, for Pulte Home Corporation (Stephen 1992). The property consisted of two parcels. The first parcel, consists of about 4 ha (10 acres). The second parcel, consists of about 8 ha (20 acres). Land ownership is private.

The survey by PAST located two areas of cultural resources; these were labeled Locality A and Locality B. Locality A consisted of four possible rock piles and two possible rock alignments, associated with a single plainware sherd. PAST recommended addition site recording and monitoring for this area. On November 10, archaeologists from SWCA, Inc. inspected Locality A; based on this inspection, we concluded that the rock piles and alignments are natural rather than cultural modifications and recommended that no further archaeological studies be done (SWCA 1992a:l).

Locality B, was recorded as a 60 by 60 m artifact scatter that contained hundreds of sherds, more than 50 pieces of flaked-stone, and a single groundstone artifact. Two areas of ash and charcoal were also found. Stephen (1992) determined that Locality B was AZ BB:9:144 (ASM). This site was originally recorded by archaeologists from the Arizona State Museum in 1984.

From November 22 through November 25, SWCA, Inc. completed archaeological testing of AZ BB:9:144 (ASM). Based on the results of the testing program, a data recovery program was proposed (SWCA 1992b). Data recovery took place from December 10 through December 16. R. Thomas Euler was the Project Manager, David A. Phillips, Jr. was the Principal Investigator, and Mark C. Slaughter was the Project Director. The excavation crew consisted of Susan Bierer, Ken Boden, and Bill Grimm. Data recovery required 17.25 person-field-days. Materials were processed at SWCA’s archaeological lab under the direction of Laurel Myers. Linda M. Gregonis analyzed the ceramics, Mark C. Slaughter analyzed the lithic materials, and Linda Scott Cummings and Kathryn Puseman examined pollen and botanical data. Chuck Sternberg illustrated the maps found in this volume. Ron Beckwith illustrated the artifacts.

Collections, notes, photographs, and drawings from the project have been submitted to the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona, for permanent curation.
