Excavations at the Mound 3 Precinct Southeast Cemetery, Las Colinas, AZ T:12:10(ASM)
Author(s): K.J. Schroeder
Year: 2008
Summary
Advanced Mobile Storage, Inc . (AMS) Phoenix. Arizona, undertook upgrades and modifications to its existing storage facility in the Fall of 2007, during which time all ground disturbing activities were monitored by Roadrunner Archaeology & Consulting (RAC) staff. The storage facility is an irregular L-shaped area within a 385 x 460 ft area consisting of approximately 3.074 acres of privately owned property. In addition, an area approximately 20 x 17 5 meters of Phoenix City property was monitored.
The modifications and upgrades did not expand the size of the facility. However, significant subsurface disturbance occurred within the existing facility. The AMS facility is located on land that was the former prehistoric site named Las Colinas. AZ T:12:10(ASM). This site (a.k.a Kalfus Ruins) was a large, 850-1200 acre multi-component Hohokam village with platform mounds, trash mounds, adobe surface structures, pithouses, burials, canals, and support features such as storage and thermal pits, hornos, caliche borrow pits, et cetera. Although the area disturbed by the construction aspect was relatively limited, a significant cemetery with associated features (primary inhumations, a crematory, secondary and tertiary cremations) was encountered. In addition, one significant historic feature was located.
