Archaeological Investigations of the Osborn and Hazzard Family Homes, Tucson, Arizona

Summary

In August of 2001, archaeologists explored an area located within the historic Presidio neighborhood of downtown Tucson. Previous testing of the two lots, in conjunction with research in area libraries, revealed that the area had been the home of two prominent Tucson lawyers and their families from the late 1880s to the 1910s (Wocherl 2001). Numerous artifact-filled features surrounded the foundations of two homes and had the potential for providing a large amount of information about the lives of the these families, including many details not preserved in surviving records. Documents rarely reveal the foods people ate, the types of possessions they owned, or how they organized their daily life. These types of information can be recovered from archaeological sites, thereby providing more information about the everyday lives of past Tucson residents. Based on the preliminary findings, a data recovery phase was recommended, and a number of outhouse pits, borrow pits, and other features containing artifacts were excavated.

This report presents the results of the project. This chapter contains background information about the local environment and the general prehistory and history of the Tucson Basin. The history of lots 11 and 12 of Block 172 is discussed in Chapter 2, with a focus on the dwellings and the people who once inhabited them. Chapter 3 describes the archaeological excavations and the features uncovered. The artifacts found at the site are detailed in Chapter 4, and the food materials recovered are examined in Chapter 5. Finally, Chapter 6 provides an overview of the daily life of the Osborn family, who lived at the site from the early 1890s until 1919.
