Santa Cruz Bike Path Data Recovery

Summary

The City of Tucson, Arizona has proposed the construction of a recreational bike path paralleling portions of the Santa Cruz River. Previous investigations identified two archaeological sites that will be affected by the undertaking: AZ BB:13:95 and AZ BB:13:96 (ASM). These sites meet eligibility requirements for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, and Desert Archaeology, Inc. was contracted to complete data recovery programs at the sites to mitigate the effects of construction.

Data recovery investigations consisted of surface collection, backhoe trenching, and geomorphic documentation. A Rincon phase Hohokam occupation was identified at both sites, but subsurface remains were limited. Only a single roasting pit was excavated at BB:13:96. Additional near-surface deposits may also exist outside of the bike path construction area, and geomorphology suggest the possibility of a deeply buried component.

Significant cultural deposits were not encountered during data recovery, and investigations have adequately address the effects of the proposed bike path. Therefore, additional archaeological work is not recommended, and the project should proceed as proposed.
