Summary
This document reports the results of archaeological monitoring and data recovery along a proposed extension, Marana, Arizona. The alignment runs through a portion of the known prehistoric site of Los Morteros (AZ AA:12:57[ASM]), and the historic-period homestead of Charlie Maish (AZ AA:12:377[ASM]). The work was requested by Pulte Homes Corporation for sewer and road construction in a future development section and was performed between June and October 1999 (Arizona State Museum Permit Number 1999-4bl and project-specific Permit Number 1999-108ps). Data recovery at the historic period site was conducted by Homer Thiel and Andrew Dutt of Desert Archaeology, Inc. Site stratigraphy, the layout of the farmhouse structure, and an adjacent pit were recorded, and artifacts, including prehistoric items, were collected. The site was subsequently destroyed by construction activities. Monitoring was performed by Helga Wöcherl of Desert Archaeology, Inc. The main objective of monitoring was protection of potentially present human burials. No human remains were found during monitoring.
