Archaeological Data Recovery of Bajada Rock Features for the Los Reales Landfill Expansion Project

Author(s): Andrea K. L. Freeman

Year: 1996

Summary

At the request of the City of Tucson, Desert Archaeology, Inc., conducted data recovery of archaeological resources on a parcel of Arizona State Trust land south of the Los Reales Landfill. Data recovery was recommended by Desert Archaeology on the basis of a survey conducted in October of 1994. A data recovery plan was submitted to the City of Tucson in August of 1995, and data recovery investigations were conducted on October 23-24,1995. These investigations consisted of excavation of 1-m by 1-m units to evaluate features and depositional conditions, and controlled sample surface collection of artifacts in site and non-site areas located on the property.

The archaeological data recovery was conducted to obtain information from a sample of the archaeological features in the area in order to mitigate the impacts of expansion of the landfill and borrow pit. Four prehistoric rock piles were investigated, three of which were excavated. Additional excavations were conducted on a possible rock pile and in a non-feature context within a non-site area to determine the depositional context of artifacts found there. Additional controlled surface collection revealed less surface expression of archaeological material than was observed on the initial survey.

The following report summarizes the results of that archaeological testing and sample survey, and evaluates cultural resources present on the property. This work was conducted under regulations provided in Title 12, Chapter 8 of the Arizona Antiquities Act of 1960 (revised 1990) and under State of Arizona permit number 1995 98PS. All sites are designated with Arizona State Museum (ASM) site numbers.
