Archaeological Investigations and Analyses, 48LA71DD, Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Laramie County, Wyoming: Final Report
Part of the F.E. Warren AFB Project Metadata project
Author(s): Dori M. Penny; Paul H. Sanders; Thomas K. Larson; Larson-Tibesar Associates
Year: 1986
Summary
During November and December of 1984, surface collections and test excavations were conducted at an historic cultural material deposit located along a portion of a sewer line corridor within the boundaries of Francis E. Warren Air Force Base (Formerly Fort D. A. Russell and Fort F. E. Warren). This area, referred to as 48LA71DD, is outside the boundaries of the F. E. Warren National Historic District. Large amounts of historical material including bottles, bottle glass, non-bottle glass, ceramics, leather, metal, wood, brick, other building materials, and faunal remains were recovered. The artifactual materials and excavation unit profiles indicate that 48LA71DD functioned as a trash dump/landfill during a period extending from approximately World War I to World War II (ca. 1918-1940). As a result of field investigations and the accompanying analyses, information was obtained pertaining to consumption patterns and refuse disposal on a military base. Due to the lack of significant time depth, the apparent mixing of the deposits, and the limited significant research potential of the materials examined, the investigated portions of 48LA71DD are not believed to be eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
