Dolores Archaeological Program Technical Reports, DAP-059: Additive Technologies Group Midlevel Research Design

Part of the Dolores Archaeological Program project

Year: 1983

Summary

The Dolores Archaeological Program's Additive Technologies Group analyzes ceramic and worked vegetal artifacts. Preliminary analyses are carried out for each material class to provide descriptive data for inventory control and field reports. Ceramic data includes the temper classification, technological attributes, typological affiliation, and vessel form. Worked vegetal artifacts data include the technological attributes and material identifications. Both preliminary and intensive analyses were designed to satisfy the program research design's data needs. Economy and adaptation were evaluated by patterns of resource use contrasted with resource availability, basketry and ceramic manufacturing technology, use of ceramic vessels, and evidence for organizational aspects of ceramic production. Ceramic data was used as proxy measures for human occupation and site occupation duration as they provide evidence for immigration into the area. Social organization was analyzed using measures of local exchange of ceramics and distribution patterns of higher-cost ceramics between households and sites. Foreign relationships were analyzed using ceramic exchange patterns within and outside of the Mesa Verde region.
